Dewi Sant yw nawddsant Cymru. Rydyn ni’n dathlu ei fywyd ar 1 Mawrth bob blwyddyn, ac yn cofio eiriau ei bregeth olaf, sef ‘gwnewch y pethau bychain’.

Saint David (Dewi Sant) was a monk who lived in Wales during the sixth century. History tells us that David’s parents were called Sant and Non. Sant was a Prince of Ceredigion and Non came from a noble family.

David received his education in a monastery in Hen Fynyw, near Aberaeron, from a blind monk called Paulinius. After receiving his education, he went to preach the gospel all over Wales and the continent.

David performed a number of miracles during his lifetime, including restoring Paulinus’ sight and when addressing a crowd in Llanddewi Brefi, he stood on a handkerchief and a small hill raised under his feet so that everyone could see him. He became one of the most influential members of the Celtic Church during the sixth century. The location of the monastery that David established in Pembrokeshire still holds his name – St Davids.

Saint David is the patron saint of Wales. We celebrate his life every year on 1 March, and remember the words of his last sermon, ‘do the little things’.
